Major studios to sit out iTunes movie announcement

When Apple announces the availability of movies through iTunes tomorrow, it will do so with less fanfare and support from Hollywood than the company had hoped for.

Movie industry insiders have confirmed published reports that Apple will deliver download sales of movies from Disney, but other major studios will be nowhere to be found. The sticking point, once again, centers around pricing and marketing models.

Major movie studios—with the exception of Disney, whose board of directors Apple CEO Steve Jobs now sits on following Disney's purchase of Pixar earlier this year—have long been reluctant to surrender their digital downloads to Apple by allowing purchases through the iTunes Store. Instead, those studios have sought subscription and rental model agreements with Apple, against the desires of Apple management.
